Project 1: Parallel Coordinates. Car Transmission
In this project we explore the not-so-popular Parallel Coordinates charts. We selected the classic dataset “mtcars” which contains data extracted from the 1974 Motor Trend Magazine and has information about the performance of 32 cars on 11 different variables.
Our goal is to find unknown patterns that help distinguish between Automatic and Manual Transmission cars by its performance. We created two Parallel Coordinate figures with the following variables:
- qsec: ¼ mile time in seconds
- hp: Gross horsepower
- disp: Displacement (cu.in)
- mpg: Miles per Gallon
- am: Transmission (0 = automatic, 1 = manual)
Insights:
According to our sample, we can conclude that Automatic cars on average:
- Are faster (qsec is lower) compared to manual cars
- Their engines have more power (hp and displacement are relatively higher)
- Drive longer distances with just one gallon (mpg is higher)
The goal of these representations was to find the relative differences between both groups, that is why we are not showing absolute values on the vertical axis.
